A study carried out in 2013, published by the Indian Dermatology Online Journal revealed that smokers are 2 and a half times more susceptible to premature grey hair than people who do not smoke. This is simply because of the toxic chemicals in smoke that cause damage to your hair cells. This leads to the thinning of hair and appearance of grey hair.
Grey or white hair may indicate an increased risk of heart disease
The European Society of Cardiology carried out a study to understand the link between grey hair and increased risk of heart disease. The study included 545 male participants, who were divided into groups, based on whether or not they had coronary artery disease and how much grey or white hair they had
The amount of grey hair was scored on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being hair that is white all over. The researchers also collected data on the men concerning diabetes, hypertension, family medical history and smoking habits.
To conclude, the research revealed that the men who already had coronary artery disease had “a statistically significant higher hair whitening score and higher coronary artery calcification” than those without it. The study also found that a hair score of 3 or more was associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease.
